The U.S. Tour of Duty is part of a cultural revival led by civic-minded military veterans and their allies. A collaboration between HomeFront Rising and the Arts Council for Long Beach, with funding provided by the California Arts Council, our mission is to develop the artistic abilities and creative expression of veterans, and to nurture relationships between veterans and the general public for the greater good. We apply a broad concept of creativity to social and economic issues such as housing, sustainability and entrepreneurialism. Our dynamic events in Southern California feature live performances and workshops. A blueprint is being formulated for nationwide deployment in 2018.

    Healing Through Creativity

Healing Through Creativity: A Creative Warrior's Journey is a workshop based on Richard Harvey's book 20 Poems 20 Paintings: A Creative Warrior's Journal. He wrote it to share how creativity, connectivity and play helped him process multiple cancer diagnoses and a divorce. In the workshop, participants read and discuss transformational poetry and artwork with the goal of generating The Vocabulary of Hope and Empowerment. Participants employ this language while writing their own stories and creating images that represent their experiences. We share our creativity, experiences, and the tools and strategies we have acquired through our challenges so everyone leaves with valuable materials we can apply to our lives and share with others when we decide to serve as advocates and mentors. The workshop and book are especially helpful for people who are health-challenged, in grief, in recovery, going though PTSD, and those who love to express themselves with creativity and play and to connect with inspired communities of creative support.
