Our U.S. Tour of Duty applies the mindset and training of veterans to civilian life by fostering mutually rewarding teamwork aimed at improving communities.
The Porter Street Park Project is a multi-dimensional campaign to clean up and revitalize the neighborhood surrounding Porter Street between Santa Fe Avenue and Mateo Street in Los Angeles. The focal point is property subleased and used as a parking lot by The Vortex, a community center near the Arts District and Boyle Heights. Veterans are collaborating with area youths to convert the parking lot into a multi-purpose park. The campaign is led by HomeFront Rising founder Jeff Norman, and longtime activist Carmelo Alvarez, who previously spearheaded similar efforts in Los Angeles and Tijuana.
